Type 1 Civilization Laboratories

Elevating humanity toward a Type 1 civilization.

Independent research in food, water, safety and planetary modeling, aimed at the problems that hold humanity back. Our computation platform, Singularis, is open by invitation to verified US organizations.

What we stand for

Technology that serves America and advances civilization.

US oversightThe Singularis credit platform is designed to operate under United States government oversight: the United States decides who receives computation and how much. That gives America technological, computational and political soft power. Every credit comes from one central ledger and every grant is recorded, with allocation controls built for oversight: per-organization and per-user limits, allow and deny lists, US-only eligibility, revocation and a tamper-evident audit trail. Status: free launch credits for invited, verified US organizations now; the full platform is pending approval from the United States government.
Philanthropic capitalismWe design technology that makes life and the environment better, while helping fund causes that advance civilization. Our commercial work, Singularis computation today and, in the future, the ISON VR helmet and virtual reality credits, is meant to help pay for life-saving designs we intend to give away, starting with the firefighter protective suit. Status: a plan in place; the giveaway designs are research in progress.
Transitional capitalismWe plan to license potential technology to companies as they transition toward a Type 1 civilization, enhancing companies, not replacing them, across virtual reality, holographic works, space travel, robotics and higher learning. Singularis shows the approach: it runs on computers companies already own, and with the GPU boost on one NVIDIA RTX 4090 we measured up to 18.3× faster dense math than the same program on a single-thread CPU. Status: planned; licensing cost to be set in the future.

Philanthropic projects

Design and research in progress. Nothing here has been built yet, and we make no claims of results.

Food growth towersFeeding more people with less land, water and fertilizer. Food growth towers are indoor, controlled-environment farms where each growing tier is a floor of the tower, with recirculating water and climate managed tier by tier. Our modeling points to potential water savings and higher yields for leafy greens and similar produce, and is honest that staple grains like wheat do not pay at today's electricity costs. Status: design and computer modeling; nothing built yet.
The Roman aqueductAn old Roman idea, rebuilt with modern engineering to move water using gravity. Our modeling looked at where geometry can replace energy in making seawater drinkable. It found that gravity alone does not lower the energy needed to remove salt, but it can potentially carry fresh water across a region without pumping, the way Roman aqueducts did. Status: research and modeling.
Coastal clean waterCoastal technological adaptation for clean water. We are studying how modern membranes, better membrane geometry and renewable power could potentially make desalination cheaper and simpler, with designs sized for coastal towns. Our models compare reverse osmosis, forward osmosis, membrane distillation, solar stills and other methods side by side. Status: research and modeling; no plant has been built.
Firefighter protective suitA suit designed to manage heat better, to be given to firefighters free. The design layers a reflective outer shell, air gaps and insulation over a cooling layer, uses a frame that carries much of the weight to the ground, and adds sensors for seeing through smoke, toxic gas, vital signs and man-down alarms. The goal is potentially more time and more margin for the people who run toward the fire. Status: simulated design; nothing has been built or tested in fire.
Hurricane protectionModeling storm surge and early warning to give communities more time to prepare. We model how hurricanes grow and move, including storm surge for vulnerable coasts such as Bangladesh, and study ideas that could potentially lessen a storm's intensity. Our models also rule out ideas that physics does not support. Status: research and computer modeling only.

Mission

A civilization that can care for its whole planet.

On the Kardashev scale, a Type 1 civilization is one that can use and manage the full energy and resources of its home world. We are not there yet. Getting there means solving hard, practical problems: food, water, safety, health and warning before disaster.

We are an independent research company working on those problems directly. We would rather be clear about what is still research than promise what is not yet done.

EnergyUsing the planet's resources wisely and fully.
ResilienceProtecting people from fire, storms, quakes and disease.
AbundanceEnough food and clean water for everyone.

Research

Six areas of active research.

Each one is a place where better modeling and better engineering could save lives, water or food. None is a finished product yet.

01 / RESEARCH

Agriculture

Feeding more people with less land, water and fertilizer.

Soil, water, weather and crop growth all affect each other. We are building models of those connections so growers and planners can test choices before they plant, not after a season is lost.

02 / RESEARCH

Coastal desalination

An old Roman idea, rebuilt with modern engineering.

Roman aqueducts moved water across whole regions using gravity and careful design. We are studying how that same thinking, combined with modern membranes, materials and renewable power, could make fresh water cheaper and simpler for coastal communities.

Active research
03 / RESEARCH

Firefighter protective suit

More time and more margin for the people who run toward the fire.

Firefighters work in heat that can overwhelm today's gear. We are researching a protective suit that manages heat better, using simulation to study how layers, materials and cooling hold up before anything is built.

04 / RESEARCH

Pandemic modeling

Better scenarios, earlier, for the people who have to decide.

Outbreaks move through networks of people, travel and time. We are working on models that let public health planners compare scenarios quickly. These are projections to support planning, not predictions.

Active research
05 / RESEARCH

Ocean modeling

The ocean drives our weather, our food and our coasts.

Currents, heat and salinity shape everything from fisheries to storms. We are researching ocean models that run at finer detail, so changes along coastlines can be seen sooner.

06 / RESEARCH

Hurricane and earthquake modeling

Working toward earlier, clearer warning.

Hurricanes and earthquakes take lives because warning comes late or not at all. We are researching models of storm growth and track, and of stress in the earth's crust, with the goal of giving communities more time to prepare.

Founder

Started by an independent inventor.

Type 1 Civilization Laboratories was founded by Oscar Velasquez, an independent inventor. His work brings together computation, modeling and practical engineering, with a focus on problems that affect everyday lives.

Platform

Singularis

Singularis is our computation platform: measured computing that runs in a desktop app on your own computer, so your data stays on your machine. It is built to power our own research and is offered to selected partners.

With the GPU boost on one NVIDIA RTX 4090, against the same program on a single-thread CPU, we measured up to 16.5× faster AI training, up to 18.3× faster dense math and 3.2× faster FFT. Results vary by hardware; on an A40 we measured 5–7×. Our compression made 21 test files 1.28× smaller than xz -9e and 1.49× smaller than zstd -19, every file restored exactly.
